How do you fix a Shopify cart drawer that won't open?

A cart drawer that will not open is usually one of three things: a JavaScript error killing the theme's cart code, the drawer setting turned off in the theme customizer, or an app that took over the add-to-cart behavior. Open your browser console first. If there is a red error when you click add to cart, fix that error and the drawer comes back. No error usually means a setting, not a bug.

First: is it broken, or just turned off?

Before debugging, check the obvious. Go to Online Store, then Themes, then Customize. Open the theme settings (the gear icon, not a template), look for the cart settings, and confirm the cart type is set to Drawer and not Page. Many themes let you switch between a drawer, a page redirect, and a notification popup. If it says Page, the drawer is not broken: the store is redirecting to the cart page by design, and "not opening" is the setting working as configured.

Also check whether the drawer opens on some templates and not others. If it works on the homepage but not on product pages, a product-template-specific script or section is the likely cause, which narrows the search considerably.

Check the browser console

Open the store in Chrome, press F12, and click the Console tab. Click add to cart and watch. A red JavaScript error at the moment of the click is your culprit: something in the page is throwing before the drawer's open function runs. The error message usually names the file, which tells you whether it is theme code, an app script, or a custom snippet.

If the console is clean, the problem is almost certainly configuration. Clean console plus dead drawer points at the cart type setting, an app that replaced the cart behavior, or the drawer markup missing from the theme (rare, and usually after a botched code edit or a theme update that overwrote customizations).

The usual culprits, in order

App conflicts come first. Upsell apps, cart customization apps, and "sticky add to cart" apps commonly replace the theme's add-to-cart handler with their own. If the drawer stopped working right after installing or updating an app, disable that app and test. Many of these apps have their own cart drawer or redirect setting buried in their configuration, so check the app's settings before uninstalling it.

Broken theme JavaScript is second. A syntax error or a failed script in the theme's global JavaScript file can prevent all theme interactions, including the drawer. This often follows a manual code edit or a theme update. Preview an older published version of the theme or a fresh copy from the theme store: if the drawer works there, the problem is in your current theme's code, and rolling back the last edit is the fastest fix.

Missing cart drawer markup is third. If someone edited the theme's layout or cart files and removed the drawer's HTML, the JavaScript has nothing to open. This shows up as a working add-to-cart (items land in the cart) with no drawer. Check that the drawer snippet is still rendered in the layout, and compare against a duplicate of the untouched theme if you are unsure.

Fixing without breaking checkout

Test in a theme preview, not on the live store. Duplicate the current theme, make your fix in the copy, and verify the drawer opens, items add correctly, and quantities update. Cart JavaScript and checkout entry are connected: a bad fix that breaks the cart form can strand shoppers before checkout, which is worse than a missing drawer.

When you find the offending app or script, fix the conflict rather than ripping things out under pressure. Disable the suspect app, confirm the drawer returns, then either configure the app's own cart handling or contact its developer with the console error. Most cart-app developers have seen this exact conflict and know the setting that resolves it.

Why does add to cart work but the drawer never appears?: The item is added to the cart, so the cart API works. The problem is only in the drawer's trigger or markup: the cart type setting, a JavaScript error, or missing drawer HTML.
