Why are your Shopify product images blurry, and how do you fix them?

Blurry Shopify product images usually mean the theme is stretching a file that is too small. How to tell whether the upload or the theme is at fault, and the fixes that actually sharpen them.

Why product images go blurry

Blurry product images on Shopify almost always come down to one thing: the image being displayed is smaller than the space it fills, or the theme is loading a thumbnail-sized file and stretching it. Shopify's image system serves multiple sizes of every upload through its CDN, and your theme picks which size to request. When it picks wrong, or when the original upload was too small, the browser stretches a low-resolution file and everything looks soft.

The other common cause is the upload itself. Phone photos look sharp on a phone screen but may only be 800 pixels wide, which is not enough for a product page that displays images at 1200 pixels or more. Screenshots and social media downloads are even worse, since they are already compressed and small.

Check the source image first

Before touching any settings, check the actual file you uploaded. In Shopify admin, open the product image and look at its dimensions. For most themes, product images should be at least 1600 pixels on the longest side; 2048 is the safe standard that covers zoom and retina displays. If your original is 600 pixels wide, no setting will make it sharp. Re-upload a larger version.

File format matters too. JPEG is fine for photos. PNG is better for graphics with text or sharp edges but produces huge files for photos. Avoid uploading images that have already been through multiple rounds of compression, such as images saved from Instagram or WhatsApp.

How themes pick image sizes

Shopify themes use the image_url filter to request specific sizes, like 800x or 1200x. A well-built theme requests a size appropriate for the display and uses srcset to serve larger files to retina screens. Problems appear when a theme hardcodes a small size, when srcset is missing, or when a customization changed the layout width without updating the image requests.

If only some images are blurry, compare a sharp one with a blurry one. Right-click each image in your browser and open it in a new tab: the URL will contain the size Shopify served, something like _800x or _1200x. If the blurry images are being served at much smaller sizes than the sharp ones, the theme's size selection is the problem, not your uploads.

Fixes that work

Start with the uploads: replace any product image under 1600 pixels wide with a larger version. Then check your theme's image settings; many themes have a quality or size setting for product images that may be set too low. If the theme lacks srcset on product images, a developer can add it in under an hour, and it is the single highest-impact fix for sharpness on retina displays.

For zoom features, make sure the zoom loads the full-size image rather than the displayed size. Some themes zoom into the same file that is already on screen, which just magnifies the blur. The zoom should fetch the largest available version.

What not to do

Do not try to fix blurry images with sharpening filters or by uploading the same small image at a larger file size. Upscaling a small image in an editor adds pixels but not detail, and the result looks the same or worse. The only real fix is starting from a larger, cleaner source file.
