Why is your Shopify announcement bar not showing?
The announcement bar is set up but invisible on the storefront. The usual culprits: theme settings, app conflicts, and the dismissal cookie that hides it from you but not your customers.
The dismissal cookie gotcha
Start with the most common cause: you closed the bar once, and now it stays hidden for you. Most announcement bars set a cookie or local storage flag when dismissed, so the bar remembers not to show again on your browser. Your customers see it fine; you cannot, and you conclude it is broken.
Test in an incognito window or a different browser before changing anything. If the bar appears there, it was the dismissal flag all along. Clear your cookies for the store or wait out the flag duration, and stop debugging a problem that only exists on your machine.
Theme and section settings
If the bar is hidden everywhere, check the theme editor. The announcement bar is usually a section in the header group, and it can be disabled per template. A bar enabled on the homepage template but not on product templates will seem to vanish when you navigate the store.
Also check the visibility conditions. Some themes let you schedule the bar or show it only on certain pages, and a leftover schedule from a past promotion can silently suppress it. Open the theme editor, find the announcement bar section, and confirm it is enabled on the templates you care about with no date restrictions active.
App conflicts
Banner and popup apps often fight the theme built-in bar. If you installed an announcement app while the theme bar was also enabled, you can end up with two bars stacked, or the app hiding the theme bar via CSS. The result looks like a broken bar when it is actually two systems colliding.
Pick one system. If you use an app for advanced targeting, disable the theme built-in bar entirely. If the theme bar does what you need, uninstall or disable the app. Running both guarantees weird behavior eventually, usually right before a big sale.
The step-by-step fix
Work through it in order. First, check incognito to rule out the dismissal cookie. Second, open the theme editor and verify the bar section is enabled on your templates with no schedule limiting it. Third, look for competing banner apps and disable the one you are not using. Fourth, check for custom CSS hiding the bar, searching your theme code for display none near announcement selectors.
If it still does not show, check whether the message content itself is empty. A bar with no text configured renders as nothing, which looks identical to a broken bar. It sounds obvious, but empty message fields after duplicating a theme are a real support ticket category.
Frequently asked questions
Why can customers see my announcement bar but I cannot?
You almost certainly dismissed it once, and the bar set a cookie or local storage flag to stay hidden on your browser. Open the store in an incognito window to confirm. This is the single most common announcement bar mystery and it is not actually broken.
How do I reset the announcement bar dismissal?
Clear cookies and site data for your store domain in your browser settings, or wait for the dismissal flag to expire, which varies by theme. Some themes offer a reset in the theme editor. For testing changes, always use an incognito window so dismissals do not pollute your checks.
Can I show different messages on different pages?
With the theme built-in bar, usually not beyond template-level control. For page-specific or audience-specific messages you need a banner app with targeting rules. Decide based on need: one storewide message belongs in the theme bar, segmented messaging belongs in an app.
Does the announcement bar slow down my store?
The theme built-in bar is negligible: it is a few lines of HTML and CSS. Banner apps vary widely, with some loading heavy scripts and tracking pixels for a simple text bar. If page speed matters to you, prefer the theme bar and measure any app with a before and after speed test.
