Start with the basics: check that search is enabled, test with a product title you know exists, and rule out a recent app or theme change. Most broken Shopify search is a settings, indexing, or script conflict problem, not a mystery.

## First, define what not working means

Search can fail in different ways: the box will not open, typing shows no suggestions, results miss products that exist, or the results page is blank. Each symptom points somewhere different, so note exactly what happens before changing anything.

Test on mobile and desktop, and in an incognito window. If search works incognito, a browser extension or cached script is part of the story.

## Check products and settings

Make sure the products you tested are active, available on the online store channel, and not hidden by a search exclusion app. Draft and archived products never appear, which catches people more often than any bug.

New products can take a short while to appear. If a product added today is missing but older products show, give indexing time before assuming breakage.

## Rule out app and theme conflicts

Search apps replace the built in search, and a disabled or expired app can leave broken code behind. If you recently removed a search app, check whether its snippets are still in the theme and whether search settings point to something that no longer exists.

Theme updates can do the same in reverse, overwriting custom search code. Compare behavior in a fresh unpublished theme preview: if search works there, the problem lives in your live theme.

## Look at predictive search

If the search box opens but suggestions never load, the predictive search endpoint may be blocked by a script error. Open the browser console on the search page and look for errors naming search or a recently installed app.

Fix script errors one at a time and retest. Guessing and removing code in batches often breaks something else while hiding the real cause.

## When to restore and rebuild

If search broke right after an edit, roll the theme file back to the previous version from the theme editor history instead of patching forward. A known good version is the fastest fix in the whole list.

Once search works, document what caused it and keep a duplicate of the working theme. Search is revenue critical, and the next breakage will be faster to fix with a clean fallback.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does Shopify search miss products that exist?

Common causes are products not being active on the online store channel, recent additions still indexing, or a search app excluding them. Check status and channel first.

### How do I test if an app broke my search?

Preview a fresh theme without the app code, or disable the search app briefly and test the built in search. If it works, the conflict is in the app or its leftover code.

### Why does search work on desktop but not mobile?

Mobile search often uses a separate drawer or icon in the theme, with its own code. A theme edit or app can break the mobile trigger while desktop search stays fine.

### How long do new products take to appear in search?

Usually minutes to a few hours. If a product is still missing the next day, check its status, channel availability, and any search exclusion settings.
