Clicks that do nothing, buttons that spin forever, carts that never update. A diagnostic order for the add to cart failures Shopify owners actually meet.

## Start with what kind of broken it is

Add to cart failures look identical from the owner's chair and are completely different underneath. Note the exact symptom: nothing happens on click, the button spins and stops, the cart count never changes, the drawer opens empty, or the shopper lands on a cart page missing the item. Each symptom points at a different layer.

Also note the scope. Broken for every product or one product, every shopper or one browser, since a theme publish or an app install? Half of diagnosis is bounding the problem before touching anything, and a storewide failure after a change has an obvious first suspect.

## The usual suspects, in order

First, JavaScript errors. An app embed or a recent theme edit with a script error can halt the cart code entirely. Open the browser console on a product page, click the button, and read the red lines; an error naming a file or app is your culprit more often than not.

Second, variant state. An unavailable or improperly selected variant can disable the button's action silently, especially with apps that rebuild variant selectors. Third, cart drawer conflicts, where the item adds correctly but the drawer or notification that should confirm it is broken, which feels identical to failure from the shopper's side.

## Test like a shopper, isolate like a mechanic

Reproduce in a private window with no extensions, on a second browser, and on a phone. If it works there, the issue is narrower than the store. Then duplicate the theme, and on the copy, disable app embeds in batches and preview after each batch. The embed whose removal restores the button is the conversation you have with that app's support, with evidence.

If a recent theme edit precedes the failure, roll the specific file back from the theme's version history rather than restoring the whole theme and losing unrelated fixes. Surgical rollback is why version history exists.

## Prevent the sequel

After the fix, place a real order path test: add from a collection, from search, and from the product page, on mobile and desktop, including a variant change before adding. Buttons fail at edges, and a single happy path test misses the variant case that caused the ticket.

Keep a short change log for the store: theme publishes, app installs, and embed changes with dates. The next time the button breaks, and something always breaks eventually, the log turns a day of guessing into a ten minute correlation.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does add to cart work on desktop but not mobile?

Mobile often loads different theme sections, sticky add to cart bars, and app interfaces, any of which can carry their own bug. Test the exact mobile element that fails, including sticky bars, in a real device view. The desktop fix does not transfer automatically.

### Can an app break add to cart without being a cart app?

Yes. Any app injecting scripts into product pages can throw an error that stops the page's other scripts, including the cart's. Reviews, bundles, and page builders are frequent accidental culprits. The console error and the disable and preview test identify the injector.

### The item adds but the cart drawer shows empty. What is broken?

Usually the drawer itself: its refresh call fails or it renders stale data while the underlying cart is correct, which a cart page visit confirms. That is a theme or drawer app issue, not an add to cart failure, and it still costs sales until fixed because shoppers trust what they see.

### Should I switch themes if the button keeps breaking?

Only after the cause is identified. If the culprit is an app embed, the problem follows you to the new theme. If the theme's own cart code is repeatedly at fault and unsupported, switching becomes rational. Diagnose first; rebuilds are expensive ways to keep the same bug.
