A discount code that fails at checkout costs trust at the worst possible moment. Expiry, eligibility, minimum spend, product restrictions, and stacking settings cause most failures, and each one has a specific check.

## Reproduce the failure exactly first

Test the code yourself at checkout, logged out, in a private window, with the exact cart a shopper would have. Note the precise error message or silent behavior, because Shopify distinguishes the causes in its messages more than people realize. A code reported as not working can mean invalid, expired, ineligible for these items, or blocked by another discount, and those are four different fixes.

Use the code exactly as published, character for character. Codes copied from emails and social posts pick up trailing spaces and smart punctuation, and a surprising share of failures are the code as typed rather than the code as configured. Rule out the copy before you rebuild the promotion.

## Expiry, activity, and usage limit causes

Open the discount in the admin and read its status and dates before anything else. Codes fail quietly when a campaign end date passed, when a scheduled start has not arrived in the store timezone, or when a total usage limit or one per customer limit was reached by earlier orders, including test orders staff placed during setup.

Check the code spelling inside the admin against what marketing sent out. A transposed character in the announced code creates a promotion that works perfectly for a code nobody has. If the announcement is wrong, the fastest fix is usually adding the announced spelling as an additional code rather than correcting customers.

## Eligibility and cart condition causes

Most remaining failures are eligibility mismatches. The code applies to specific products or collections and the cart contains something else. A minimum purchase amount is set just above the typical cart. The code excludes sale items and everything in the cart is already discounted. Each condition is invisible to the shopper, who just sees rejection.

Compare the code conditions line by line against a failing cart. Pay attention to collections maintained by conditions, where a product silently left the collection when its tags or price changed, taking its discount eligibility with it. That drift is the classic reason a code works at launch and fails a month later with no edits to the code itself.

## Stacking and conflict causes

When a code is valid and eligible but still refuses, look for conflicts. An automatic discount already applied to the cart can block codes that are not set to combine, and gift cards, loyalty apps, and bundle apps each add their own interaction rules. The shopper sees one rejection. The cause is a negotiation between systems that never met.

Decide your combining policy deliberately, set it on each discount rather than by accident, and test the combinations shoppers will actually attempt during your next sale. A five minute test matrix before a campaign beats a support queue full of code failures during it, when every failed checkout is a shopper deciding whether your store is broken or just ungenerous.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does Shopify say my discount code is invalid?

Usually because the code as typed does not match the code as configured, the discount is not active yet or has expired, or a usage limit was reached. Check spelling and status in the admin first, then test in a private window with the code copied directly from the discount page.

### Why does a code work for some products and not others?

Because the discount is restricted to certain products or collections and the cart contains items outside them. Products can also drift out of condition based collections when tags or prices change, silently losing eligibility. Compare the code conditions against the exact cart that failed.

### Can a discount code conflict with an automatic discount?

Yes. If either discount is not set to combine, an automatic discount already on the cart can block a code at checkout. Review the combination settings on both discounts and test the pairing shoppers will use during sales, not just each discount alone.

### How do I stop code failures before a big sale?

Run a test matrix the day before. Every announced code, a typical cart, an edge cart just under the minimum, and the combinations with automatic offers. Fix conditions while the store is quiet. Most code failures are configuration details that take minutes to fix once found.
