Shopify product images not loading: fixes in order
Blank product images have a short list of usual causes, from file and CDN issues to theme and app conflicts. Work through the fixes in the order that finds the fault fastest.
Confirm the shape of the problem first
Before changing anything, define what is broken. Are all images missing or only some products? Missing on every device or only mobile? Broken since a change, a theme edit, an app install, a bulk import, or forever on one old product? Each answer points at a different layer, and five minutes of narrowing saves hours of random fixing.
Open the product in the admin and look at the media itself. If the image is broken in the admin too, the file or the upload is the problem and no theme work will help. If the admin shows it fine, the storefront layer, theme, app, or delivery, is where the fault lives.
File and upload causes
Corrupt or interrupted uploads produce products whose images never really arrived. Reupload the original file, ideally exported fresh rather than copied from a previous download, and check the format and size are within normal ranges. Extremely large files occasionally fail in ways that look like theme bugs but are really storage and processing problems.
Bulk imports create a subtler version. Image URLs from a supplier or an old platform can expire or block hotlinking, so the product references a file Shopify never actually stored. The fix is to upload real files into Shopify rather than trusting external links that were never under your control.
Theme, app, and lazy loading causes
When images exist but the page shows blank space, lazy loading conflicts are the prime suspect, especially after installing an optimization or gallery app. Two systems deferring the same images can leave them waiting forever. Test by disabling the newest image related app or feature and reloading in a private window.
Theme edits break image code quietly. A changed product template, a removed image tag attribute, or a script error higher on the page can halt the gallery entirely. Compare against an unmodified copy of your theme using the preview function. If images load in the clean theme, the fault is in your edits or apps, not in Shopify.
Delivery and browser level checks
Occasionally the images are fine and the visitor connection is not. Ad blockers and aggressive privacy tools sometimes block image CDN patterns, and corporate networks filter aggressively. Test from a phone on cellular with no extensions. If images appear there, your store is healthy and the reports describe the visitor environment.
When the fault is genuinely yours and nothing above finds it, check the browser console on the product page for errors naming the image files. A 404 means the page requests files that do not exist at that address. A blocked or mixed content warning means URLs are being generated wrongly. The console names the layer, and fixing the named layer beats reinstalling things at random.

Frequently asked questions
Why do product images show in admin but not on my store?
That split means the files exist and the storefront layer is failing to display them. The usual causes are lazy loading conflicts from apps, a broken product template after theme edits, or a script error stopping the gallery. Preview an unmodified theme to isolate which.
Can an app really break all my product images?
Yes. Image optimization, gallery, and speed apps all intercept how images load, and two of them together commonly conflict. Disable the most recently added image related app first and reload in a private window before making any bigger changes.
What image size should I upload to Shopify?
Upload the largest clean original you have, within reason, and let Shopify generate the sizes it serves. Problems start at the extremes, tiny files that cannot fill modern screens and enormous files that fail processing or slow every page they appear on.
How do I know if it is my store or the visitor browser?
Reproduce it yourself on a clean setup, a phone on cellular data with no content blockers. If images load there, the store is serving them and the problem sits in the reporting visitor environment, such as blockers or filtered networks.
