A checkout button that will not click is the most expensive bug a store can have, because the customer did everything right and still cannot pay you. The usual causes, from variant states to app conflicts, and the order to check them in.

## Start by reproducing it properly

Before changing anything, see the bug the way a customer does. Open your store in a private browser window, add the exact product and variant from any customer report, and try to check out. Half of all checkout button reports turn out to be specific to one variant, one device, or one state, like a sold out size that was never unselected, and fixing the general button never touches the real problem.

Note whether the button is missing entirely, visibly disabled, or present and clickable but unresponsive. Those are three different bugs wearing one description, and the fix paths barely overlap. A screenshot or screen recording from the customer, if you can get one, is worth more than a paragraph of description.

## The variant and inventory causes

The most common cause is state: the selected variant is sold out, unavailable, or not yet chosen. Many themes keep the checkout and add to cart buttons disabled until a valid variant exists, and if a product's options are configured oddly, say a default variant that is not purchasable, the button can stay disabled forever even while the product page looks healthy.

Check the product's inventory states in the admin and the theme's behavior for sold out variants. Also check whether a preorder or subscription app has taken over the purchase buttons; those apps intentionally replace or gate the standard flow, and a misconfigured one presents exactly as a dead button.

## App and script conflicts

A button that renders but does nothing on click is usually a JavaScript error, often from an app script or a recent theme edit breaking the page's scripts before the button's handler ever runs. Your browser's developer console will show the error in red on the product page. You do not need to understand it fully; the error text often names the app or file responsible, which tells you whose support to contact.

Work backwards from change. Buttons break the day after something shipped: an app install, a theme update, a new tracking script. Temporarily disabling the most recent addition, in a duplicate unpublished theme when possible, confirms the culprit faster than reading code. This is also the strongest argument for keeping a clean backup theme with no edits.

## The cart drawer and checkout settings causes

Some reports blamed on the product page actually live in the cart. A cart drawer whose checkout button is covered by a sticky banner, a cookie notice, or a chat widget is technically present and practically unclickable, especially on smaller phone screens. Test the full path on a real phone, not just a resized desktop window.

Finally, check the boring admin causes: a store not yet fully set up for payments, a password page state confusion for staff testing while logged out, or checkout settings altered during a migration. If the button works for you logged in as staff but not for the public, suspect permissions and setup states before suspecting code. Fix order summary: reproduce exactly, check variant state, read the console, remove the newest change, then test the whole path on a phone.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is my checkout button greyed out for one product only?

Almost always the variant state for that product. The selected or default variant is likely sold out, unavailable, or not fully configured, and the theme correctly disables purchase for an unbuyable variant. Check that product's variants and inventory first.

### How do I know if an app is breaking my checkout button?

Open the product page with your browser's developer console visible and look for red JavaScript errors, which often name the app or script. Then test in a duplicate theme or with the newest app temporarily disabled; if the button revives, you have the culprit.

### Customers say the button does nothing when clicked. What is that?

A rendering but unresponsive button usually means a script error stopped the page's JavaScript, or an overlay element is sitting invisibly on top of the button swallowing clicks. Both are checkable on a phone and in the console within minutes.

### Could my cookie banner block checkout?

Yes, more often than people expect. A banner or chat widget positioned over the cart drawer's checkout button on small screens makes it unclickable while looking fine on desktop. Always test the complete checkout path on an actual phone.
