# Shopify Product Images Not Loading: How to Diagnose It

Blank product images have a handful of causes, from oversized files to app conflicts. A diagnostic order that finds the real one.

## Name the exact failure first

Images not loading covers four different problems: images missing entirely with blank space, images present but broken icons, images loading so slowly they appear broken, and images loading on desktop but not mobile. Each has a different cause list, so the first diagnostic step is describing precisely which failure, on which page, on which device.

Ask whether it affects all products or one, and when it started. A store wide failure that began today points at themes, apps, or platform issues. A single product failure that was always there points at that product's files themselves.

## Check the files themselves

Open the product in the admin and confirm the images are actually attached and preview correctly there. Corrupted uploads, unsupported formats, and absurdly large original files all surface at this step. A 20 megabyte image straight from a camera will load like it is broken on real connections even when nothing is technically wrong.

Reupload a problem image in a standard format, JPG for photos and PNG where transparency is needed, at a sensible size. If the front end image returns, the file was the fault, and the rest of the catalog deserves a size audit before it produces the same ticket.

## Check theme and app interference

If images preview in the admin but fail on the storefront, suspect the delivery layer: a recently edited theme, a lazy loading app misfiring, or an image optimization app rewriting URLs incorrectly. Test on an unpublished copy of the theme with recent changes reverted, and disable the most recently installed image related app as a controlled experiment.

Browser console errors settle arguments here. A 404 on image URLs means the storefront is requesting files that do not exist at those paths, which is a code or app problem, not a file problem. That distinction decides who needs to fix it.

## The CDN and the rare platform case

Shopify serves images through its content delivery network, and very occasionally a propagation or regional issue makes images fail for some visitors while the store owner sees them fine. Check the store from a different network, such as a phone off wifi, before assuming the problem is yours.

When every check points away from your store and reports arrive from multiple customers in the same window, check Shopify's status channels and document timestamps. Rare does not mean never, and a calm, evidence backed support ticket resolves platform cases faster than a theme rebuild.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do my images load on desktop but not on mobile?

Usually file size or a mobile specific lazy loading fault. Huge originals that desktop broadband tolerates can stall on mobile connections, and some themes load mobile images through different code that breaks after updates.

### Can an app break product images?

Yes. Image optimization, lazy load, and gallery apps all rewrite how images are delivered, and a misconfiguration or a conflict after a theme update can produce blank images store wide.

### What image size should I upload to Shopify?

Large enough for zoom, small enough to load: most stores do well with images around 2000 pixels on the long edge in JPG for photos. Camera originals many times larger add load time without visible benefit.

### How do I tell a file problem from a theme problem?

If the image previews correctly in the admin but fails on the storefront, the file is fine and the delivery layer is at fault. If it fails in the admin too, reupload the file first.
