Size and color selectors that do nothing, or update the price but not the cart, are classic storefront bugs. How to isolate whether it is theme, app, or data.

## Name the exact failure first

Variant bugs come in flavors that look alike in a support ticket and are nothing alike in code. The selector may do nothing at all, update the image but not the price, change the price but add the default variant to the cart, or work on desktop and fail on the product quick view. Each pattern narrows the cause considerably.

Reproduce it precisely: which product, which option order, which device. A bug that only happens when the second option is chosen on a three option product is a different bug from one that fails on every product, and the person fixing it will ask. Arrive with the pattern already mapped.

## Theme and script causes

Most selector failures are JavaScript problems in the theme: a script error halting execution, a recently edited product template, or two components fighting over the same click. The fastest test is a fresh, unmodified theme preview. If variants work there, your live theme code is the fault, and the fix is a diff against what changed, not a rebuild.

App injections are close behind. Swatch apps, pre order apps, subscription widgets, and size chart tools all hook into variant selection, and two of them hooking the same event can leave the selector dead or double firing. Disable variant touching apps one at a time in a preview or off peak window, retesting after each, until the selector behaves.

## Data causes people overlook

Sometimes the code is fine and the product data is not: duplicated option names, options with stray spaces, variants created by import with mismatched values, or a product whose option structure changed after apps built dependencies on the old one. The selector then requests a variant combination that does not exist and quietly fails.

Test a brand new, simple product created by hand with two sizes. If that product works perfectly while imported or older products fail, stop debugging code and audit the data on the failing products. Recreating one broken product cleanly is often faster than hunting a phantom theme bug for a day.

## A fix order that protects sales

Work in this order: confirm scope, preview a clean theme, disable suspect apps individually, test a fresh manual product, then fix the identified layer and retest the original failing case plus a normal purchase end to end. Skipping the end to end test is how a selector that now changes price still ships adding the wrong variant to the cart.

Document what it was. Variant bugs recur whenever the same app combination or import process returns, and a two line note in your store log turns the next occurrence from a day of diagnosis into a ten minute repeat of a known fix.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does the price change but the cart add the wrong variant?

The display logic and the add to cart logic have desynchronized, usually because an app or theme script updates the visible price while the form still holds the default variant ID. It is typically a script conflict, found by testing a clean theme and disabling variant apps.

### Can a CSV import break variant selection?

Yes. Imports can introduce duplicate option values, trailing spaces, or inconsistent option names that make some combinations unresolvable. Test a manually created product; if it works, compare its option data character by character with a failing imported product.

### The selector works on desktop but not mobile. What differs?

Mobile often uses a different template section, sticky bar, or drawer with its own variant controls, and an error or missing binding there leaves desktop untouched. Test and debug the mobile components specifically, including the sticky add to cart bar.

### Should I reinstall my theme to fix variants?

Rarely as a first move. Preview an unmodified theme to confirm the theme is the problem, then diff or restore the product sections in your live theme. A full reinstall throws away customizations to fix what is usually one broken snippet.
