Shopify Pickup Option Not Showing at Checkout: What to Check

Local pickup is enabled, inventory is stocked, and checkout still shows shipping only. The eligibility chain for pickup, link by link: locations, inventory, and product settings.

Pickup is a chain, and it breaks at links

Local pickup does not fail randomly. It appears at checkout only when a chain of conditions all hold at once: pickup is enabled for a location, that location stocks the items in the cart, the products are eligible, and the customer is in range of that location. Break any link and the option quietly vanishes, which is why stores chase their tails checking the setting they already checked.

Debugging a chain means testing links in order rather than rechecking the strongest one. The main pickup toggle being on is the link everyone verifies. The links that actually break are usually inventory placement and product level details, two screens away from where the complaining starts.

Location and inventory links

Start in the shipping and delivery settings and confirm pickup is enabled per location, not just somewhere in the store. Multi location stores trip here: pickup enabled at the warehouse does nothing for the retail store the customer lives near, and the location the customer expects must be the location that offers it.

Then check stock at that exact location for the exact items in a test cart. Pickup requires available inventory at the pickup location. An item stocked only at another location will not offer pickup, correctly, and a cart mixing items from different stocking locations can lose the option for the whole order. Reproduce the failing cart precisely, item for item, before concluding anything is broken.

Product and checkout links

Some products are ineligible by nature or by setting: products fulfilled by third parties, certain subscription or preorder setups, and items marked as shipping only will not offer pickup. Check the product fulfillment details for the items in the failing cart, especially anything recently connected to a fulfillment app, since that connection often changes eligibility silently.

Finally, test as the customer the option is meant for. Pickup availability can depend on the checkout address being within the store defined radius or region. Testing from your own out of area address, or with no address entered, produces a missing option that is actually the system working. Use a local test address inside your pickup zone before declaring the feature down.

Verify the fix and document the chain

Build a small test matrix once: one stocked item at the pickup location, one mixed cart, one out of stock at pickup location item, each with a local address. Run it after any change to locations, inventory sources, or fulfillment apps. Pickup breaks most often as a side effect of unrelated changes, and the matrix tells you within minutes whether the chain survived them.

Write the chain into your store documentation with the settings locations named. The next person to debug a missing pickup option, possibly you in eight months, should not have to rediscover that eligibility lives in four places. Most recurring storefront bugs are not technical mysteries. They are undocumented chains meeting normal staff turnover.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pickup show for some products and not others?

Because eligibility is per item and per location. An item must be stocked at a location that offers pickup. Products fulfilled elsewhere or stocked only at other locations will not offer it, and a mixed cart can lose pickup entirely. The product by product pattern is the system reporting stock truthfully.

Does pickup work with Shop Pay or accelerated checkout?

Accelerated checkouts present pickup when the cart and locations qualify, but the surest test is the standard checkout path first. If pickup is missing everywhere, fix the eligibility chain. If it is missing only in one accelerated path, you are looking at a presentation issue in that flow instead.

How long after enabling pickup does it appear?

Settings changes are usually effective within minutes, though a storefront cache can lag. If the full chain checks out, locations, stock, product eligibility, local address, and the option is still absent after an hour, test in a private browser window to rule out your own cache before escalating.

Can I offer pickup for some locations but not others?

Yes. Pickup is configured per location, which is the right design for stores with a retail shop and a warehouse that cannot serve walk ins. The common mistake is assuming the store level setting covers every location. Verify each location individually when pickup reports come in.
