A product reads sold out while inventory says otherwise. The usual causes are location stock, variant tracking, and publishing settings. A diagnostic order that finds yours.

## Sold out is a verdict from several systems

The storefronts sold out label is not a direct reading of one inventory number. It is the result of several settings agreeing: the variant is tracked and available, stock exists at a location that fulfills online orders for the customers market, the product and variant are published to the online store channel, and the theme is displaying the right state. When any one of those disagrees with the others, the shopper sees sold out while an admin screen somewhere shows healthy numbers, and both screens are telling their own truth.

That is why sold out bugs feel maddening: the number you are looking at is real, and irrelevant. The fix is to stop asking how much stock exists in total and start asking whether sellable stock exists for this variant, at an online location, in this channel, for this market. Each clause of that question is a separate check, and the order below follows the frequency with which each one is the culprit in real stores.

## Locations and fulfillment settings first

The most common cause is location mismatch. Stock was received, adjusted, or transferred into a location that does not fulfill online orders, is not active for the online store, or sits below the priority order while the locations that do serve online customers hold zero. Markets complicate it further: a product can be available domestically and correctly sold out for an international customer whose market is served from an empty location, and testing from your own address will never reproduce their view.

Check the variants inventory breakdown by location in the admin, confirm which locations are set to fulfill online orders, and confirm the stock physically sits in one of them. If you recently added a warehouse, a prep center, or a retail location, this is almost certainly your bug, because new locations commonly receive stock before their online fulfillment role is configured. Move or allocate the stock, align the settings, and retest from the storefront as a customer, not from the admin preview.

## Variant, tracking, and publishing checks

Next, the variant level traps. A single variant set to not tracked, or tracked with its inventory at a different location, or left with a deny oversell state and zero count, will show sold out while its sibling variants sell fine, which is why sold out bugs so often affect one size or color only. Check continue selling when out of stock per variant: it explains the opposite bug too, items overselling, and a store can carry both settings errors on different variants from the same import.

Then publishing. Confirm the product is active, not draft or archived, published to the online store sales channel and to the right markets, and scheduled availability dates have passed. Apps join the list here: pre order, wholesale, and inventory apps can impose their own availability states over the top of native stock, and a product can be natively available and app level sold out simultaneously. If the bug appeared the week an app arrived, audit the apps rules before re auditing Shopify.

## Theme display and the verification order

Occasionally the stock is fine and the label is the lie: a theme or app renders a sold out badge from stale data, a variant picker fails to update the availability state when options change, or a cached page shows last weeks truth. Test by switching variants back and forth, loading the product in a private browser window, and checking whether adding to cart actually works behind the label. If the cart accepts the item, you have a display bug to hand a developer with exact reproduction steps, not an inventory problem to fix by adjusting numbers.

Close every sold out investigation the same way: reproduce as the customer, in their market if relevant, on the exact variant, and complete an add to cart. Record which clause of the sellable question failed in your store notes. Location, variant, channel, market, app, and theme are a short list, and the second occurrence of any of them in your store will take minutes instead of an afternoon if the first one was written down.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does Shopify say sold out when inventory shows stock?

Because sold out depends on more than the total count. The stock must be for that variant, at a location that fulfills online orders, published to the online channel and the customers market. Stock sitting at a retail only or inactive location is the most common cause of the mismatch.

### Why is only one size or color sold out incorrectly?

Variant level settings differ per variant: tracking, location counts, and oversell permission are all set variant by variant, often during imports. One variant with zero at online locations or different tracking will show sold out while siblings sell normally. Check that specific variants inventory by location.

### Can an app make a product show sold out?

Yes. Pre order, wholesale, and inventory management apps can overlay their own availability rules on native stock. If the problem began when an app was installed or its rules changed, audit the apps settings for that product before changing Shopify inventory. A test order in a private window helps separate display bugs from real availability.

### How do I verify the fix properly?

Browse the storefront as a customer, in a private window and in the affected market if relevant, select the exact variant, and complete an add to cart. Admin numbers alone do not verify a storefront state. Note which setting caused it so the next occurrence is a quick check, not a new investigation.
