Shopify images not loading: a fix order that finds the cause fast
Confirm the scope before touching anything
Establish what is actually broken: all images or some, one product or every product, one device or all, and since when. Check the store on your phone with Wi Fi off, because a problem that only exists on your office network or only in your browser cache is a different problem from the one shoppers see, and stores lose days fixing the wrong one.
Note what changed just before it started: a theme update, a new app, a bulk product import, a sale launch. Image failures are rarely spontaneous; they are the visible end of a change, and naming that change usually halves the diagnosis. Screenshot the exact symptom, including any broken image icon or blank space, for support if you need it later.
Check the files themselves
Open the affected product in the admin and confirm the images exist, are assigned to the right variants, and open at full size there. A file that is broken in the admin is an upload problem: re upload a fresh copy in a standard format, watch for extremely large originals that time out or get rejected, and avoid exotic color profiles that some browsers render as blank.
If the admin looks fine, view the live page source image address, or open the image in its own tab from the page. An image that loads alone but not on the page points to the theme or a script; an image that fails alone points to the file or its delivery, and that single distinction routes the whole repair.
Theme, apps, and lazy loading
Switch preview to an unmodified backup theme, or the fresh default theme, and check the same product. Images that return under a clean theme convict your live theme code or a recent edit; restore or repair that section rather than rebuilding the store. If the clean theme also fails, disable recently added image, speedup, or media apps next, one at a time, since optimizers and lazy loaders are frequent culprits.
Lazy loading scripts deserve special suspicion: a misconfigured loader can leave images permanently unloaded below the fold or after variant changes, looking exactly like broken files. Test scrolling slowly, changing variants, and reloading mid page, because loader bugs appear in interaction, not always on first load.
Prevent the repeat
Keep file sizes sane at upload, use consistent formats, and let the platform generate responsive sizes instead of forcing originals everywhere. Keep a clean backup theme untouched as your diagnostic reference, and stage theme edits in a duplicate, checking a product page, a collection, and a variant switch before publishing, since images are where theme edits confess first.
After the fix, click through your top selling products on desktop and phone as a shopper would, not just the page you repaired. Image faults cluster: the cause you found rarely affected exactly one photo, and the cheapest audit is the one run while the diagnosis is still fresh in your mind.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my Shopify images load in admin but not on the store?
That pattern points to the theme, a script, or an app rather than the files. Preview an unmodified backup theme: if images return, repair the live theme or remove the recent edit. If they fail there too, disable media or optimization apps one at a time and retest, and clear your own browser cache before concluding.
Can very large image files cause loading failures?
Yes. Extremely large originals can time out, fail uploads, or be left unloaded by lazy loading on slow connections, appearing as blank boxes. Resize originals to a sensible maximum for product use, keep formats standard, and let the platform serve responsive sizes. Faster, reliable images also lift conversion on mobile.
How do I know if an app broke my images?
Disable recently installed or updated media, speedup, or gallery apps one at a time and reload the affected page after each. If images return after a specific disable, that app is the cause; check its settings, update it, or replace it. Change one variable at a time or you will not know which step fixed it.
What should I check first when all images vanish at once?
Scope and recent changes: confirm it on another device and network, note any theme publish, app install, or import in the last day, then preview a clean backup theme. Site wide failures are almost always a theme or script event, not hundreds of files failing together, and the timeline usually names it.
