Contact form not sending on Shopify: what to check, in order
A contact form that silently swallows messages costs you the customers who were trying hardest to reach you. Where Shopify form emails actually go, the spam and settings traps, and how to prove the form works end to end.
Where contact form messages actually go
Shopify contact forms do not have an inbox of their own. Submissions are emailed to your store's sender email address, the one in Settings under store details, and they arrive looking like ordinary email. That single fact explains most not sending reports: the form works, the email goes to an address nobody monitors, or a filter quietly files it away.
So the first test is always the same. Submit the form yourself from the live site, then search every plausible mailbox, including spam and promotions tabs, for the submission. Check which address Shopify holds before concluding anything, because stores change hands, get rebranded, and accumulate legacy addresses in settings that no current team member reads.
The spam and deliverability traps
Form notifications come from Shopify's mail system, and some corporate and free email filters treat them aggressively. If submissions reach one address but not another, the form is fine and the filter is the bug. Whitelisting Shopify's notification sending addresses, or routing the store email to a properly configured domain mailbox, resolves most of these cases.
Also verify your sender email domain is authenticated as Shopify prompts you to do in settings. An unauthenticated sender domain degrades deliverability across all store notifications, not just form mail: order confirmations, shipping notices, everything. Fixing that one setting quietly repairs mail problems across the whole store.
Form and theme level causes
If no test submission arrives anywhere, look at the form itself. A theme edit or an app that rebuilds the contact page can break the form's required fields or its submission target. The telltale sign is the page behavior on submit: a working Shopify form lands on a success state or reloads with a posted message. A form that refreshes silently, or throws you to a generic page, is likely not posting to Shopify at all.
Custom forms built with page builders and form apps are a separate pipeline entirely, with their own notification settings inside the app. If your contact page was built by an app, its email settings live in the app, not in Shopify's settings, and the app's notification toggle is the single most common thing found switched off in these investigations.
Prove it, then keep it proven
End every fix with an end to end test from a real outside email address, and keep the successful submission. Then add the boring safeguard: a monthly calendar reminder to test the form, because form failures are silent by nature. Nobody reports the message they never sent successfully; they just buy from the store whose form answered.
Consider a visible fallback on the contact page itself: a plain email address and your social channels, written as text. It is unfashionable and it converts a total failure into a minor inconvenience for the customer standing there with a question and money to spend.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Shopify contact form submissions go?
They are emailed to the store's sender email address set in your store details. There is no form inbox inside Shopify, so if that address is old, unmonitored, or filtered, submissions appear to vanish even though the form works.
Why do form emails land in spam?
Shopify sends notifications from its own mail infrastructure, and some filters score them harshly, especially when the store's sender domain is not authenticated. Authenticate the domain in settings and whitelist the notifications, and most spam filing stops.
My form shows no success message. Is it broken?
Probably. A working Shopify contact form shows a success state after submission. If the page just refreshes with no confirmation, the form may not be posting correctly, often after a theme edit or when a page builder replaced the native form.
Can I send form submissions to two addresses?
Not directly in Shopify's settings, which hold one sender email. The practical route is an email alias or distribution address at your domain that forwards to the team members who should see submissions.
