Shopify Discount Code Not Working: Checks That Find the Cause
When a customer says the code does not work, the cause is almost always in a short list. Work through it in order and find it fast.
Start with what the customer actually typed
The most common cause of a failed code is the code itself: a letter read as a number, an old code from an expired campaign, or a code for a different store entirely. Before touching settings, get the exact code, a screenshot if possible, and the exact error message. Different error messages point to entirely different causes.
Also confirm where the customer entered it. Codes entered in a gift card field, a notes box, or a third party checkout can appear to fail while the real discount field sits unused. Half of discount support is navigation, not configuration.
Check the discount's own rules
Open the discount in the admin and read its conditions as the customer's cart sees them: active dates, minimum purchase, eligible products or collections, customer eligibility, and usage limits. A code restricted to a collection fails silently against a cart built from other collections, and a minimum spend code fails one cent below the threshold.
Combination settings are the modern trap. A code that cannot combine with other discounts will be rejected when an automatic discount or another code is already active in the cart. The shopper sees a generic failure; the rule conflict is the real story.
Check the cart against the code
Specific product exclusions, sale items that are ineligible, and subscription or preorder products with their own billing rules all produce code failures that look random from the outside. Rebuild the customer's exact cart in a test order and apply the code; the failure will reproduce, and removing items one at a time identifies the blocker.
Buy X get Y codes deserve a special look, because the qualifying items must be in the cart in the right quantities before the code does anything visible. Customers routinely apply the code before adding the free item's trigger products and conclude it is broken.
Prevent the next hundred tickets
Publish the code's plain terms wherever the code is published: dates, minimums, exclusions, and whether it combines. Most failed code contacts are expectation failures set at the moment the code was announced in an email or post with no conditions attached.
After any campaign, test the code yourself in a real cart that mimics a typical order, on mobile and desktop. A two minute merchant test catches the collection mismatch and the combination conflict before your customers find them for you at scale.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a code work for some customers and fail for others?
Eligibility rules differ per cart and customer: minimum spend, specific collections, first order only status, and combination conflicts all make the same code valid for one shopper and invalid for the next.
Where do customers enter discount codes on mobile?
At checkout, often behind an order summary expansion link on mobile layouts, which many shoppers never open. If mobile code complaints spike, check how hidden the field is in your checkout flow.
Can a discount code conflict with an automatic discount?
Yes. Combination settings decide whether codes stack with automatic or product discounts. A code set to not combine will be rejected whenever another discount is already active in the cart.
How can I test a code without placing a real order?
Build a draft order or a test cart with the exact items a customer would buy, apply the code, and read the result. Testing with a typical cart catches collection and minimum issues a settings review misses.
